Situated on the Azuero Peninsula, the province of Los Santos is the 3rd largest in Panama, with an area of more than 3,800 square kilometers. Its colonial history is clearly represented in the unique architecture and ambience of its churches and town square; whilst the tradtional Spanish heritage is all too prevalent amongst the residents.
Los Santos is reknowned for its carnivals, held annually in its capital city of Las Tablas. It is during the carnival season that multitudes of locals and tourists flock to the city to celebrate the weeklong festivities, through parades, dances, festivals and partying.
The predominant form of industry in Los Santos is agriculture, ceramics, jewelery making and metal works. The Pollera, which is Panama's national dress, was originally conceived in this province, and remains an exceptionally popular tourist purchase.
Los Santos also boasts of some of the finest Panama beaches, suitable for world class deap sea fishing, scuba diving, snorkeling and surfing. Turtle watching is also popular in these parts of the country, with the increase in eco tourism.
